Charming, profound and well worth hearing! New York. 2011. A tiny, run-down club in Manhattan. A young woman with blond curls, seductive bright red lips and great big eyes emphasised with black eyeliner is sitting at the old grand piano. In order to sing where great soul artists like Donny Hathaway or Marvin Gaye once started out, Miu scratched together all her savings and set off alone for the Big Apple once she had completed her training. To the club “The Bitter End”.
Back home in Hamburg it was soon clear that the experience she had made in the big city had left its mark. Miu wanted to make music her life.
Slowly but surely Miu put together a band that backed her distinctive souly voice with groovy arrangements and snappy brass pieces. Always ready to go, they very quickly played right through Hamburg and beyond into the hearts of the audience. Miu lives her music in the same way she dances through life in her red ballerinas. Blurring the borders between then and now, vulnerable and strong, pensive and direct, innocence and femme fatale. She sings about how it feels to lose yourself (Mirror), about encounters that are doomed to failure from the start (It Could Be You And Me) or about men who would do better to read the instructions of use before attempting a relationship with a woman (Read My Instructions). In other words, about her own life experiences.
The press quickly got wind of the charming blond and her band and fell over backwards comparing her to Amy Winehouse, Adele or Marilyn Monroe. Miu waved this aside finding it incredible and awe-inspiring while at the same time playing at the international JazzBaltica Festival (incl. a nomination for the Award for Promising Young Talent) after just one year of band history, as if this was the most natural thing in the world.
At some time or other Miu would like to play in New York again, but this time with her band. If you think about what she has achieved in just one year of band history, this does not seem so improbable.
